Erotica UK
Erotica UK is an adult exhibition held every November in London at the Olympia. The “lifestyle show” event is aimed mainly at women and couples and is tailored toward the mainstream rather than a niche audience. The event encourages visitors to celebrate sexual relationships with their loved ones, offering products and services to improve their love lives.
The organisers state that it is now the world’s largest lifestyle event “for freethinking adults who are comfortable with their sexuality” and welcomes visitors of all persuasions: straight, gay and transgender.
The event welcomes small and medium-sized companies and sole traders. Visitors can purchase or view items, including sex toys, games, DVDs, furniture, fashion, art and photography.
Free entertainment includes stage shows produced by London’s Torture Garden; The Fantasy Boys’ strip tease. In addition, NHS health advisors offer free advice, condoms and testing to attendees.
Hanen Matsuri, Japan
The Hanen Matsuri is a fertility festival held annually on March 15th. Hanen translates to rich harvest in English, and the event honours the blessings of a beautiful harvest, prosperity, and fertility.
The most famous fertility festival is held in the Japanese town of Komaki (north of Nagoya City). Shinto priests play musical instruments while a parade of participants walk through the streets dressed in ceremonial outfits. Visitors can enjoy all-you-can-drink sake.
There is also a 620-pound, 96-inch-long wooden phallus on display. The wooden phallus is taken from Shinmei Sha up a large hill during even-numbered years or from Kumano-sha Shrine to another shrine known as Tagata Jinja on odd-numbered years by the ceremonially-dressed priests.
Food and souvenirs are available throughout the festival. Large buckets of sake are also available, allowing visitors to drink as much as they want. The Shinto priests offer prayers and blessings to festival participants.
